| Advisers Pressed On Memo Fallout
Obama's Stance On Trials Is Issue By Michael D. Shear Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, April 27, 2009 White House officials yesterday confronted more questions about President Obama's position on prosecution of former Bush lawyers who drafted memos legalizing harsh interrogation methods used on terrorism suspects. In appearances on Sunday morning talk shows, Obama advisers sought to portray the president as constitutionally removed from the question of whether anyone should be prosecuted for breaking the law. "What he has said is that anyone who followed the advice of theShox Spotlight Justice Department and did any kind of acts that were within the confines of that advice, he doesn't think we should prosecute," adviser Valerie Jarrett said on CNN's "State of the Union." "The rest of it," she added, "he leaves up to the U.S. attorney general. That is who is supposed to make decisions about prosecution. "So I think the president has been very clear, and what he said is, we need to be a nation of laws, we need to be consistent, and he leaves it to the attorney general to figure out who should be prosecuted for what." Press secretary Robert Gibbs used the same argument on NBC's "Meet the Press." "The president doesn't open or close the door on criminal prosecutions of anybody in this country because the legal determination about who knowingly breaks the law in any instance is not one that's made by the president of the United States," Gibbs said. The administration's defense came as Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Obama's adversary in the 2008 presidential contest and a victim of torture during the Vietnam War, urged the White House not to pursue prosecutions. "Maybe there's an element of settling old political scores here," Shox Saikano+McCain said on CBS's "Face the Nation" program. "We need to put this behind us, we need to move forward." And other Republicans continued to vent their anger over the release of the memos, saying that Obama has made the country less safe and made it more difficult for U.S. troops. Sen. Christopher S. Bond (R-Mo.) said on "Fox News Sunday" that any prosecution would be a "stab in the back" to the CIA. "And what's worse, now the terrorists know that nothing can be done to them that wasn't done to our voluntary military enlistees in the Marines, the SEALs and pilots who went through these same techniques, and that is -- has absolutely destroyed our ability to get further information from terrorists," Bond said. Three days before Obama hits the 100-day mark, advisers also sought to portray his efforts to repair the economy as gaining some traction despite the continuing bad financial news. National Economic Council Director Lawrence H. Summers said the economic picture no longer feels like it did two months ago, when there were no positive signs and the "economy felt like itShox Fleet was falling vertically." Today, he said, "the picture is much more mixed. There are some negative indicators, to be sure. There are also some positive indicators. And no one knows what the next turn will be." Two big economic stories are likely to emerge in the next two weeks: the results of "stress tests" for the nation's major banks, which will reveal whether they are healthy or need more government aid; and the results of negotiations at Chrysler to determine whether it needs bankruptcy protection. Summers said on Fox that the administration is not desperate to help Chrysler avoid bankruptcy, adding that the process does not necessarily lead to the kind of liquidation that people often think of. Asked about the banks, Jarrett raised the prospect that the White House could force more management changes, but she declined to be specific before the results of the tests are made public next Monday. "In order to have a healthy economy, we need to haveShox Turn & Go strong banks," she said. "They need to be well-capitalized. They need to be able to lend dollars and help support our economy. And so, at the end of the stress test, we want to make sure that those are -- that the banks are in a position to do that. And so whether management changes occur, whether banks are asked to raise more capital, all of that is going to come forth in the coming week."

| Capsule reviews: `The Soloist' and other films
Capsule reviews of films opening this week: "Earth" ?? It's fundamental, cycle-of-life stuff that happens all day, every day, year-round, worldwide. Seasons change. Animals give birth and die. They migrate to find food. Some are hunters, some are hunted. Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly ?? sunrise, sunset. But all these basic, familiar occurrences are photographed and edited with such striking scope, clarity and ingenuity in the documentary "Earth," you'll feel as if you're learning about them for the first time. And for the children who are the targets of much of this material, Air jordan 1 shoes"Earth" offers colorful entertainment with, thankfully, a not-too-heavy-handed message about the perils of climate change. The debut from the Disneynature label, directed by Brits Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield, follows three species of mothers and babies over a year ?? polar bears in the Arctic, elephants in Africa's Kalahari Desert and humpback whales near the Equator ?? with a variety of wondrous creatures mixed in between. Narrator James Earl Jones provides the necessary gravitas to accompany these majestic images, and the score composed by George Fenton and performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is appropriately sweeping and grand. Many of the aerial shots ?? of sand dunes and waterfalls, of caribou traveling across the tundra or birds taking flight against a bold sunset ?? will take your breath away. Yet the more intimate images will make you wonder, how'd they do that? G. 89 min. Three and a half stars out of four. _ Christy Lemire, AP Movie Critic "Fighting" ?? Channing Tatum has the proper presence as a bruiser rising to stardom in New York City's underground fighting circuit, yet he, Terrence Howard and their cast mates are stuck in a dull, cliche-sodden drama during the many moments when someone's fist isn't connecting with someone else's jaw.Air jordan 2 shoes Director Dito Montiel's followup to his debut, "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints," has a tired old premise as an underdog (Tatum) finds a wise but down-and-out mentor (Howard) to take him to the big time and a nice new girlfriend (Zulay Henao) to lend him emotional support. Yo, Rocky! The forgettable script drowns in boring dialogue, including incoherent monosyllabic scenes where Tatum and Howard seem to engage in a mumbling duel. But you don't go to see a movie called "Fighting" for the patter. You go for the fisticuffs, and Montiel delivers with some nasty bare-knuckle rows that should satisfy fans' bloodlust. But while Tatum has an impressive physique, he's so clearly outclassed by the skilled boxers and martial-arts experts he goes up against that his success creates a serious credibility gap for the movie. PG-13 for intense fight sequences, some sexuality and brief strong language. 105 min. Two stars out of four. _ David Germain, AP Movie Writer "The Soloist" ?? Inspiring, relevant and real, the story of Nathaniel Ayers ?? a schizophrenic but wildly talented Juilliard-trained cellist living on the streets of downtown L.A. ?? captivated Los Angeles Times readers in 2005. The fact that columnist Steve Lopez didn't just ignore him like most Air jordan 3 shoespeople would ?? that he not only spoke to Ayers but befriended and wrote movingly about him ?? added to the unexpected humanity of the tale. "The Soloist" takes all those innately engaging details and turns them into what is essentially a made-for-Lifetime movie, albeit one populated by Oscar winners and nominees. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Lopez, with Jamie Foxx playing opposite him as Ayers. Wunderkind Brit Joe Wright ("Pride & Prejudice," "Atonement") is the director, working from a script by Susannah Grant ("Erin Brockovich"). On paper, you can see how this project had major promise (and it was initially was scheduled to come out at the height of prestige-movie season last year, only to be bumped to pre-summer). In execution, it's an awkward mix of gritty city visuals and mawkish sentiments in which even actors the caliber of Downey, Foxx and Catherine Keener seem to have had difficulty finding nuance. PG-13 for thematic elements, some drug use and language. 116 min. One and a half stars out of four. _ Christy Lemire, AP Movie Critic "Tyson" ?? He wants your heart, he wants to eat your children. But Mike Tyson also has a sensitive side, one he candidly reveals in James Toback's documentary. Actually, calling it a documentary suggests many voices and sources contributing to paint an objective, balanced picture of the larger-than-life former fighter. You won't see that here. Instead, you get wall-to-wall Tyson and nothing else ?? an extended monologue, Air jordan 4 shoesa stream-of-consciousness couch confessional ?? which makes for riveting viewing. (Toback does include footage of young Tyson as a baby-faced contender, as well as the infamous child-eating comment directed at Lennox Lewis and, of course, that little love nibble on Evander Holyfield's ear.) We already knew he was a born showman and a volatile force, but "Tyson" also reveals him as a natural storyteller and an athlete surprisingly capable of eloquent introspection. He still gets choked up many years later recalling the death of his beloved trainer and mentor, Cus D'Amato. But he also describes Desiree Washington ?? the woman whose rape accusation landed him in prison for three years ?? as "that wretched swine of a woman." Will the real Mike Tyson please stand up? Apparently he's all these people and more and he's not afraid to show them to you ?? and that mix of unpredictability and vulnerability make Tyson, and "Tyson," thrilling viewing. R for language including sexual references. 88 min. Three stars out of four. _ Christy Lemire, AP Movie Critic

2009-Apr-19 22:33 - Former C.I.A. Director Defends Interrogation |

| Former C.I.A. Director Defends Interrogation
Gen. Michael V. Hayden, who served as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency during the last two years of George W. Bush??s presidency, said Sunday that the Obama administration??s recent release of memos detailing harsh interrogation techniques would limit the agency??s ability to pursue terrorists in the future. The C.I.A. used harsh techniques like waterboarding on detainees from 2002 through 2005, before General Hayden became director. He told a Congressional committee in 2008 that the technique was explicitly dropped from the agency??s authorized methods in 2006 and that he believed its use was likely to have been illegal. But speaking on ?°Fox News Sunday,?± General Hayden said thatUGG Raya the descriptions gave Al Qaeda a tactical advantage by allowing them to prepare for specific practices used by the C.I.A., even if those practices are not in use now. ?°It describes the box within which Americans will not go beyond,?± General Hayden said. ?°To me, that??s very useful for our enemies, even if, as a policy matter, this president at this time had decided not to use one, any, or all of those techniques.?± The detailed memos released Thursday by the Justice Department describe techniques that were used by the C.I.A. between 2002 and 2005. The Obama administration outlawed harsh interrogations and ordered the C.I.A.??s secret prisons closed on his second day in office. The president has said that the use of so-called ?°enhanced interrogation techniques?± amounted to a dark chapter in American history. Senator John Ensign, a Republican from Nevada, also criticized the administration on Sunday, saying that the disclosure would limit future options against terrorism. ?°The harm is that if we ever return to those policies, one is they can train against them now,?± he said on CNN??s ?°State of the Union.?± ?°Do we really think that having advancedUGG Sandra interrogation techniques is something we don??t want to use if we find Osama bin Laden??± The Obama administration has said that it opposes prosecuting agents involved in interrogations using techniques that they had been told were legal, although some Democrats have raised the prospect of prosecuting senior Bush administration officials and Justice Department lawyers who authorized the harsh interrogations. Mr. Ensign and Gen. Hayden also argued that the prospect of prosecution would give C.I.A. agents pause when accepting legal advice about the practices they use. ?°The basic foundation of the legitimacy of the agency??s action has shifted from some durability of law to a product of the American political process,?± he said. ?°That puts agency officers in a horrible position.?± Democrats on Sunday played down the importance of the release of the documents, saying that most of the information was already public. David Axelrod, a senior adviser to President Obama, said there was ?°no legal rationale for keeping them classified.?± Mr. Axelrod said that the president??s ban on enhanced interrogation techniques was more important that the release of the C.I.A.??s memos. ?°We??re moving past all of that,?± Mr. Axelrod said on UGG Seline?°Face the Nation.?± ?°And to revisit it again and again and again isn??t, in the president??s view, in the country??s interest.?± Mr. Axelrod reiterated that harsh interrogation techniques are ineffective. This view was bolstered by the disclosure in the memos released last week of a debate within the C.I.A. about whether the brutal treatment of Abu Zubaydah, a detainee captured in Pakistan in 2002, yielded any real intelligence. According to the documents and former intelligence officials, the first use of waterboarding and other rough treatment against Abu Zubaydah was ordered despite the belief of interrogators that he had already told them all he knew. The harsh UGG Snowpeaktreatment led to no breakthroughs, according to one intelligence official with knowledge of the case. Gen. Hayden on Sunday questioned this account, saying that Abu Zubaydah had ?°clammed up,?± but then gave up information that led to the arrest of Ramzi bin al-Shibh, who was later charged with helping coordinate the Sept. 11 attacks. In an opinion column in Friday??s Wall Street Journal, Gen. Hayden and former U.S. Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey wrote that ?°fully half?± of the government??s information about Al Qaeda??s structures and activities came from interrogation when ?°coercive interrogation?± was used.

| UN chief hails pause in military operation against rebels in Sri Lanka
UNITED NATIONS, April 12 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday welcomed the declaration of a two-day ceasefire by the government of Sri Lanka to allow emergency humanitarian aid to reach thousands of civilians caught up in its conflict with separatist rebel Tamil forces in the north of the country. The United Nations estimates that about 150,000 to 190,000 innocent people Air jordan 10 shoes are trapped in the conflict zone in the northern Vanni region of the South Asian island nation. Unconfirmed reports suggested that hundreds of civilians have been injured in the 14-square kilometre area -- roughly the size of Manhattan, New York in the United States -- of the Vanni region designated as a no-fire zone, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said earlier this week. While some civilians have been able to leave or escape the area, reliable reports indicated to the United Nations that the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have prevented Air jordan 11 shoesothers from leaving, including by firing at them. In a statement issued here by his spokesperson here on Sunday, Ban called on the LTTE to "take concrete and immediate steps to protect civilians by respecting the pause, for its full duration," and allow civilians to leave the conflict zone. Even though the government's two-day truce was less than the several-day humanitarian pause the secretary-general had been advocating, Ban said it was a "useful first step" and "an opportunity to move towards the peaceful and orderly end to the fighting now so badly needed." "The United Nations has been in discussions with the government of Sri Lanka and other concerned parties in recent months and weeks to explore ways in which the suffering of innocent people in the Vanni region can be brought to an end or lessened," he said, adding that he has talked personally with Air jordan 12 shoesPresident Mahinda Rajapakse of Sri Lanka. "The United Nations will therefore do whatever it can to support this humanitarian pause and help end the grave predicament of civilians in the conflict zone, including through the provision of more aid to those still trapped in the zone," Ban said. "This is a terrible conflict that must be ended as soon as possible," he said. "In the meantime, with tens of thousands of lives at risk on the beaches of northern Sri Lanka, I call on the government forces to adhere scrupulously to the commitments of the government about non-use of heavy weapons." "I also count on key members of the international community to support this pause and to continue to do all they can to avert further death and suffering in Sri Lanka," he added.

| 'Phenomenal' way to kick off '09 season
BOSTON -- Josh Beckett not only came out firing, but he also departed with a 94-mph heater on the inside corner that Gabe Gross never even offered at. During an Opening Day that was just about how the Red Sox would have drawn it up, nobody stood out more than the ace, who brought back visions of 2007 Air jordan 16 shoeswith a dominant demonstration of power pitching in a 5-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. One Opening Day win against Tampa Bay will not immediately avenge last October's heartbreaking Game 7 loss in the American League Championship Series. However, Beckett could be the biggest difference-maker of all if the Red Sox are to grab the AL East throne back from the Rays. Quite simply, Beckett was never completely right last year, dealing with one malady or another from wire-to-wire. But he comes in to 2009 with his full health, and the Rays were the first to pay the price. Beckett gave up two hits and a run on Tuesday afternoon, walking three and striking out 10 over seven innings. He threw 93 pitches -- 61 for strikes -- and seemed to have everything working. "The way Beckett was throwing, he was phenomenal," said Air jordan 17 shoesRed Sox manager Terry Francona. "That fastball that he was throwing front door to the lefties, it was coming back. He has the breaking ball. He was good all day." Even if it was a day late following Monday's rainout, this was a satisfying way for the Red Sox to open their season at Fenway Park for the first time since 2002. Offensively, the Red Sox got an early jolt when 2008 AL Most Valuable Player Dustin Pedroia ripped a solo homer into the Monster Seats with one out in the bottom of the first against Rays right-hander James Shields. "It was good, it was big," said Beckett. "Pedey got me on the board in the first inning. I had a lot of adrenaline. If anything, it let me calm down a little bit with the home run. You go out there and don't really feel like you have to be that perfect in the second. It was one of those days where I had to control myself as far as adrenaline. When Pedey hit that home run, it helped me bring things down a little bit." But Pedroia was just getting revved up. The little second baseman had so much momentum as he crossed home plate that on-deck hitter David Ortiz joked that he was nearly knocked over by Pedroia's fist bump. "I was excited," said Pedroia. "You want to get off to a good start. Hopefully it takes the pressure off the other guys. I just got a good pitch to hit, and I hit it." Though Tampa Bay would come back and tie it on a sacrifice fly by Carl Crawford in the third, its momentum was short-lived. The Rays can thank Beckett for that. "He was Josh Beckett," said Rays third baseman Evan Longoria. "He was ready to pitch today. When he got into jams and stuff, he was able to make his pitches. And when the guy is doingAir jordan 18 shoes that, there's really not much you can do except tip your hat." If the Red Sox have their way, opponents will be doing a lot of cap-tipping when No. 19 is on the mound this season. "Guys played great defense and we got some timely hits," said Beckett. "I just happened to make some pitches when I needed to." On a day Shields clearly wasn't at his best, the Red Sox produced a three-run rally in their half of the third. The key hits were supplied Jason Bay (RBI single) and Mike Lowell (RBI double). Jason Varitek gave the Fenway crowd another reason to cheer in the sixth, ripping a solo homer around the foul pole in right to make it 5-1. "Everyone looked like they were having good at-bats," said Lowell. "I was really happy for 'Tek. That's a nice way to get the season going. I think we played a nice, complete game of baseball." The only blemish on the entire day for the Red Sox was the eighth inning, when the Rays rallied against Hideki Okajima and Justin Masterson for two runs, but it wasn't enough. Jonathan Papelbon came on in the ninth and shut the door emphatically, ending the day with a 96-mph fastball that struck out Gross. For all the subplots that developed during the day, the story was Beckett. "We've got a long way to go, but watching the way he'sAir jordan 19 shoes throwing is big," Francona said. "We want to lean on him." Pedroia, as slight as he is, doesn't mind being leaned on either. "I'm excited," Pedroia said. "It was a good way to start. But it's not how you start, it's how you finish." The Red Sox hope that the formula of Game 1 will be repeated early and often. "Josh was awesome," Pedroia said. "He set the tone for the game. He was pretty impressive. His velocity was great. We played good defense, and up and down the lineup, we swung that bats well. If we do that, we're going to win."

| Debate and a Senator??s Trip to the Hospital Delay Votes on the Budget
ALBANY ?? The continued illness of a Democratic state senator on Wednesday once again stalled votes on budget bills, meaning that final passage of the measure could take at least until the end of the week. While the Assembly, dominated by Democrats, finishedJordan sneakerJordan I sneakeramong Assembly Democrats, some of whom have complained about the intense secrecy with which Gov. David A. Paterson, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith negotiated a budget deal. In a rare protest, six Assembly Democrats voted against the entire budget, with some saying that its enormous size ?? with billions of dollars in new taxes and what critics say are too few tough cuts to spending ?? threatens the state??s fiscal health. Other blocs of Assembly Democrats voted against nearly all of the budget bills, another sign of discontent. (Traditionally, majority lawmakers wishing to make a point will withhold their votes from only one or two bills.) The six who voted against the whole package were William L. Parment and Sam Hoyt, both from Western New York; Joseph D. Morelle and David Koon, from the Rochester area; Joan K. Christensen, from the Syracuse area; and Michael N. Gianaris, from Queens. ?°I remain concerned that the growth of government spending in New York is not going to be sustainable given the economic distress we put it under,?± said Mr. Morelle, an influential upstate Democrat who is chairman of the Monroe County party. Those lawmakers and other critics were joined by Thomas P. DiNapoli, the state comptroller, who issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the deal as ?°a buy-time Jordan II sneakerbudget.?± ?°The budget is not a long-term solution to New York??s propensity to spend more than the state can afford,?± Mr. DiNapoli said. ?°While the budget proposes to close an unprecedented gap, it does so by an overreliance on nonrecurring federal stimulus funds and new tax revenues projected to materialize at a time of declining tax receipts.?± Under state law, if the budget does not pass both houses of the Legislature by March 31, Mr. DiNapoli??s office is forbidden to issue paychecks to lawmakers. Until the Senate passes the budget, in other words, lawmakers in both houses cannot pick up their paychecks.

| Specter to oppose union bill
WASHINGTON - In a setback for organized labor, Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania said yesterday he will oppose a bill that would make it easier for workers to form unions. Specter was the only Republican to support the Employee Free Choice Act two years ago, and unions were hoping he might be the crucial 60th vote needed to overcome an expected GOP filibuster of the measure when it is taken up this summer. Democrats and two independents who usually vote with them controlShox 45 58 seats, and would control 59 if Democrat Al Franken is seated in the contested Minnesota race. In a floor speech, Specter called it a "very emotional issue, with labor looking to this legislation to reverse the steep decline in union membership and business expressing great concern about added costs, which would drive many companies out of business or overseas." Specter has faced unusually heavy pressure from both labor and business interests and is likely to face a tough re-election challenge next year. Business groups, which have already spent more than $20 million to lobby against the bill, applauded the decision. "We applaud the senator for taking a principled standNike Men Air Force 1 Low to support Main Street employers and workers in Pennsylvania," Thomas J. Barack Obama issues surprise video offering 'new beginning' to Iran
President Barack Obama issued an unprecedented video appeal to Iran today offering a 'new beginning' of diplomatic engagement to reverse decades of distrust and animosity between the two nations. In an extraordinary videotape, which will be aired today on selected networks in the Middle East, Mr Obama said Washington was committed to pursuing "constructive ties" with Iran. He promised that Tehran could take its 'rightful place' in the world if it renounced terror and embraced peace. "My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community," Mr Obama said in the message marking the start of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, which isUGG planned to appeal direct to the Iranian people. In a major shift from the isolationist policy toward the Islamic state pursued by George Bush, he expressed an openness to direct diplomatic contacts between the countries, saying :"For nearly three decades relations between our nations have been strained. "But at this holiday we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together." Calling the Norwuz celebrations a time of 'new beginnings,' he said: "This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect." The tape is the furthest Mr Obama has gone since taking office inAir Max extending an olive branch to Tehran, which has been locked in disputes with Washington over Iran's nuclear ambitions. However he tempered his experssions of friendship with a warning that Iran should use its 'true greatness' to create rather than destroy. "You have that right (to take its place in the world) - but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization," he said. "And the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create," in a reference to Iran's nuclear programme and missile development efforts. As well as being broadcast and placed online with Farsi sub-titles in the Middle East, the appeal has been published on the White House website. |

Khartoum Rejects ICC Arrest Warrant Against President Bashir
Khartoum has sharply rejected the international arrest warrant against President Omar Hassan al-Bashir issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over his alleged Shox 2:45involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity in the restive Darfur region. The Sudanese government described the move as a western conspiracy after it decided to expel 10 foreign organizations, two local, and dissolved two others after accusing them of collaborating with the International Criminal Court (ICC). Wednesday's arrest warrant is the first to be issued against a sitting head of state by the Hague-based court, which stopped short of including a count of genocide over a conflict that U.N. officials say has killed as many as 300,000 people. The allegations stem from violence carried out in Darfur between 2003 and 2008. President Bashir is accused of instructing his forces to destroy three non-Arab ethnic groups in DarfurNike Women Air Force 1 Low Mid High with the intention of genocide, leaving millions displaced from their homes in addition to the large death toll. Senior vice president of the International Crisis Group Mark Schneider tells reporter Peter Clottey that the international community clearly needs to back the warrant after Khartoum rejected the indictment. "The ICC indictment for atrocity crimes in Darfur follows a long investigation that clearly demonstrates to the court his responsibility. And as a result of the indictment, obviously for the victims of the Darfuri massacres, this provides a clear statement of the crimes that they suffered, and there are grounds to believe that Bashir was personally responsible," Schneider pointed out. He said there is need for the international community to demonstrate its backing of the arrest warrant against President Bashir. "I think to some degree as a result of their rejection, UGG Classic Shortthe international community has to be even more clear about its own response in support of the court. And in that regard, I think one of the first things to do is for the international community to make clear its determination to take action if there is any kind of retaliation against the internally displaced persons inside Darfur, against humanitarian agencies -- and that would be the worse possible result. Hopefully, the government of Khartoum does not do that," he said. Schneider said Khartoum views the warrant in a different light, which culminated in Wednesdays' rejection. "I think that is the view of the government of Sudan, and it's not the view of the ICC really. The ICC believes that it has full authority to review war crimes, crimes against humanity, which are exactly what the indictment charged Wednesday. Where did it take place? In this case, Darfur. And one would hopeShox Cognescenti in fact that the government will take a step back and look for a way to establish a fully credible, internationally credible system of judicial accountability and would undertake their actions aimed at a peaceful settlement of the Darfur conflict. At the same time, it still has responsibility of fully implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) with respect to the North-South conflict in Southern Sudan," Schneider said. He is hopeful that executives of the ruling party would back the full implementation of the 2005 comprehensive peace accord, which effectively ended the war between the North and the South. "One would hope that those within the NCP (National Congress Party) who have the ability to make decisions would understand that it's in their long-term interest to cooperate with the ICC and to fully implement the CPA and to fully seek to ensure the consolidation, if you will, of the North-South peace. That is the only way, truly, that the country would be able to move forward, and that you could have some lifting of sanctions in the future," he noted. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has urged Khartoum to UGG Classic Tallcooperate with all U.N. entities and ensure their safety after the warrant was issued for Bashir's arrest. Earlier in the day, several thousand people waving pictures of Bashir turned out in a rally in Khartoum and denounced the court. Schneider says the protesters could have been organized by Khartoum. "I think that there are two things: one is to what degree do observers believe that those demonstrations are spontaneous, and to what degree do they believe that they were organized and paid for and directed by the government agencies. I think the latter is essentially the case," Schneider pointed out. |

| Japan Must Move Away From U.S. Dependency, DPJ??s Hatoyama Says
By Toko Sekiguchi and Takashi Hirokawa Feb. 24 (Bloomberg) -- The Democratic Party of Japan, which is likely to take power after this year??s elections, will seek an alliance with the U.S. that is less subordinate than that of the last 50 years, a senior DPJ lawmaker said. ?°We want to move away from U.S. dependencyShox Ride & Plus to a more equal alliance,?± party Secretary General Yukio Hatoyama said in an interview in Tokyo yesterday. ?°We??ve followed the U.S. subserviently in the past.?± The DPJ, which has never led the government, is poised to oust the Liberal Democratic Party from its almost unbroken half- century of control. Party head Ichiro Ozawa has called for a more assertive foreign policy and unsuccessfully opposed the use of Japanese naval vessels for refueling aid in the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan. With Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso??s approvalNike Women Air Force 1 Low Mid High ratings falling toward single digits, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took the unusual step of meeting Ozawa and Hatoyama during her stop in Tokyo last week. Clinton and President Barack Obama have emphasized the importance of ties with Japan, and Ozawa assured Clinton that a DPJ-led government will still treat the bilateral alliance as the country??s most important one. ?°Ozawa told Clinton he is misunderstood by the U.S.?± as being antagonistic toward the alliance, Hatoyama said. ?°We are only looking for an equal relationship, which we believe the U.S. also prefers.?± Hatoyama spoke hours before Aso left for Washington to be the first foreign leader to visit Obama. The Japanese premier??s public support is falling as his plans to lift the world??s second-largest economy from a worsening recession have stalled in parliament. Criticism of Leadership Aso has come under fire from senior members of his own party for his lack of leadership, which was underscored last week when Finance Minister Shoichi Nakagawa quit UGG Ultimate Tall Braidafter appearing to be drunk at a press conference in Rome following a meeting of ministers from the Group of Seven nations. ?°Aso??s cabinet of buddies led to that unimaginable event,?± said Hatoyama, who like the prime minister and Nakagawa is the son of a prominent politician. The DPJ will create a cabinet based on ?°not on their electoral prospects, but on merit,?± Hatoyama said. ?°In this light, it??s quite possible that non-lawmakers will be appointed.?± Hatoyama??s party controls the less-powerful upper house of parliament ahead of a lower-house election that must be called by Sept. 10. The DPJ??s support rate is at 29 percent, compared with the LDP??s 20 percent, the Mainichi newspaper said yesterday. The same poll put Aso??s approval rating at 11 percent. Convincing Voters The DPJ must convince voters that it can govern if it is to unseat the LDP, which has run Japan for all but 10 months since 1955, Hatoyama said. The one interlude, the 1993 coalition government of Morihiro Hosokawa, collapsed amid internal Shox Allegria Glowdivisions and allowed the LDP to regain power. ?°There are many people who, due to the failure of the Hosokawa administration, feel that a change in government means returning to that time of ideological clashes,?± Hatoyama said. ?°There are still those who aren??t confident about putting the government in the hands of the opposition.?±

Study Shows Signs of Slow Progress in the Search for an H.I.V. Microbicide
Finding a microbicide is one of the thorniest problems in AIDS research. Women in poor countries need a vaginal Shox 2:40gel that blocks the AIDS virus but not sperm because many still want children. They also need one that can be inserted secretly: for too many women, any action that implies that a partner is infected is likely to result in a beating. And men who have sex with men may well need a microbicide that works rectally. Previous trials of microbicides had to be stopped when they proved ineffective or even made women more likely to become infected. New research presented in Montreal last week suggested that progress is being made, but slowly. In a study supported by the National Institutes of Health, UGG Classic Minia new gel called Pro 2000 was tested in 3,099 women in Africa and the United States. It appeared to protect them 30 percent better than a placebo, but researchers are awaiting results of a British study on 9,000 women. Gels containing one or two antiretroviral drugs, tenofovir and FTC, were tested in monkeys. They appeared to give 100 percent protection ?? but researchers cautioned that only six monkeys got each gel, that the gels had high doses of drugs, and that what works with simian virusNike Women Air Force 1 Low Mid High in monkeys does not always work in humans. Oral doses of tenofovir appeared to partly protect monkeys from rectal exposure to the virus. Many studies of prophylactic tenofovir are under way in humans.

Handful of Firms Benefit in Senate Bill
WASHINGTON -- The stimulus package the Senate approved Tuesday may technically be free of "earmarks," but it nonetheless includes several provisions that would likely benefit only a handful of specific corporations. President Barack Obama said in his news conference Monday that the legislation contains no earmarks, the funds for pet projects that lawmakers often slip into bills -- and which Nike Air Force 1 Midwere a big issue during the presidential campaign. But several sections of the Senate bill direct billions of dollars in spending that would benefit a limited number of big firms. Such items could be a source of friction as Senate and House leaders negotiate a compromise package, and some targeted provisions may be cut. Some House Democrats are angry about cuts to infrastructure projects in their version of the legislation, including school construction. "There are clearly provisions targeted to benefit specific companies and industries," said Steve Ellis, the vice president of Taxpayers for Common Sense. One example: The Senate added $200 million for a "virtual fence" along the nation's Southwestern border, a project headed by Chicago-based Boeing Co. The bill directs that stimulus money for the program be spent by the end of September 2010. Boeing is the prime vendor under a contract that runs through Shox Legend Trainerthis year and includes three one-year options ending in 2012. The government has approved at least $933 million of funding for Boeing on the project so far, but the project has stalled. Total costs are expected to reach about $8 billion. In an email exchange, a Boeing spokeswoman said she doesn't know how many jobs would be created through the $200 million of proposed stimulus funding. The Department of Homeland Security ordered a stop to the project last year following a slew of technical problems, redirecting funds to physical fencing. But last week it partially lifted the order, allowing Boeing to begin preliminary work aimed at restarting the effort later this year, according to congressional officials. The Senate plan gives another component of the Department of Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration, $1 billion to buy and install specialized baggage-screening gear for airports. Only a handful of companies are certified to make these machines, according to TSA officials and UGG Duclairindustry lobbyists. Most of the Senate money would have to buy machines designed to detect explosives in checked bags, according to lobbyists. Only three companies currently produce gear that qualifies: L-3 Communications Holdings Inc., General Electric Corp. and Reveal Imaging Technologies Inc. An L-3 spokeswoman declined to comment. Michael Ellenbogen, Reveal's CEO, said machines are needed at airports across the country under post-9/11 requirements, adding that each entails construction on site. GE said significant funds will go for infrastructure and any funding it might get for gear "will have a direct and positive impact on jobs" in California. Funds could also be spent to fill some or all of the roughly 1,300 slots left at U.S. airport checkpoints for advanced X-ray machines to screen carry-on bags. Only two companies, Shox 45Rapiscan Systems, a subsidiary of OSI Systems Inc., and Smiths Detection, a division of Smiths Group, sell machines currently certified. A spokesman for Rapiscan said his company would create about 185 manufacturing jobs if all 1,300 slots were filled with Rapiscan machines. A spokesman for Smiths didn't return calls seeking comment Another provision in the legislation would provide hundreds of millions of dollars to build a satellite system to monitor climate change. That would be a boon to Northrop Grumman Corp. and Raytheon Co., which have been working on such a satellite for a decade. Randy Belote, a Northrop spokesman, said it is almost certain the funding would go toward the system under development by the two defense contractors. A Raytheon spokeswomanUGG Cove said the company doesn't comment on pending legislation. Beyond benefiting specific vendors through specialized procurement, other spending in the bill could save millions of dollars for a small group of companies -- those that operate barges on the Mississippi River, Ohio River and other inland waterways. The bill allocates $500 million for construction and repairs of navigation locks, dams and other projects on the inland waterway system. Normally, barge operators are supposed to pay half the cost of these improvements, but the bill waives that requirement.

Obama visit to Canada will be short and focused on business
U.S. President Barack Obama's trip to Canada on Feb. 19 will only last about six hours and will focus on discussions on the economy. Sources told the Canadian Press on Thursday that Obama has insisted his first foreign trip as president be business-oriented and not include much pomp and ceremony. The schedule, which has not yet been officially Shox Legend Trainerapproved by the White House, has the president arriving in Ottawa at about 10 a.m. on Feb. 19 and departing by 4 p.m. There will be no state dinner and Obama will not be making a public speech or addressing Parliament during the visit, said the sources, who are involved with organizing the trip. Obama will be greeted at the airport by Gov. Gen. Micha?lle Jean before heading to Parliament Hill for what is anticipated to be a one-hour meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The discussions between the two leaders are expected to focus on the economy and trade. Obama will also have a brief meeting with Opposition UGG Ultimate CuffLeader Michael Ignatieff and will host a news conference in the afternoon. He will then meet with U.S. Embassy staff at the airport before getting back on his plane and returning to Washington. Obama does not feel he can justify being away from the United States and participating in lavish ceremonies when his country is in the midst of an economic recession, the sources said. "It's a business visit," Ignatieff told CBC News. "The initiative for it to be a business visit was on the American side. I think the Canadian side accepts that." Though the visit won't be a fancy affair, the sources said Obama's choosing Canada still represents the administration's recognition of the importance of the two countries' relationship.

Snow to bring further disruption
Commuters face more disruption and hundreds of schools are to remain closed after the heaviest snowfalls in 18 years hit parts of the UK. South-east England was badly hit on Monday with delays on motorways and cancellations of trains and flights. The snow is expected to move north, with the Pennines, north-east England, eastern Scotland and the Borders forecast to bear the brunt. Forecasters say ice could also make roadsShox Allegria Glow hazardous in southern England. The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for much of the UK. Snow drifts BBC Weather Centre's Alex Deakin said the Pennines could see up to 12 inches (30cm) of snown on Tuesday. Falls of up to eight inches are also possible in north-east England, eastern Scotland and the Borders. Strong winds could cause snow to drift in those areas, worsening the conditions. Snow will also continue across south Wales and south-west England, and spread into Northern Ireland, our forecaster said. More snow is likely in northern Scotland onNike Women Air Force 1 Low Mid High Wednesday, he added. More than 3,000 UK schools closed on Monday and a significant proportion are expected to remain shut for a second day. They include all schools in Birmingham, Bradford and the Borders, and all 403 state schools in Surrey. Dozens are also set to be closed in Leicestershire, Derby and Lincolnshire. On Tuesday morning, trains on the East Coast Mainline were disrupted, with at least nine rail services between London and Leeds cancelled. A spokesman for Network Rail, which runs Britain's railUGG Ultimate Short infrastructure, said there would be "a much better service" on commuter routes into London than on Monday, but passengers are still being advised not to travel on South West Trains. Services into London from Kent and Sussex will resume. Eurostar services from St Pancras International are suffering from ongoing problems and all train passengers are advised to check National Rail Enquiries before setting out. At about 0500 GMT, Transport for London was predicting that most bus services in the capital would return to normal on Tuesday, having been suspended on Monday morning, but some routes may still have to be withdrawn because of poor road conditions. The Bakerloo line on the London Underground was also part suspended due to adverse weather. London City airport remains closed until further notice, while Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick airports are predicting a second day of "significant delays andShox FSM cancellations". Flights at Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen are also at risk of disruption. British Airways said diversions on Monday meant many planes were not in the right places for their departures on Tuesday. The Highways Agency is continuing to warn drivers not to travel unless their journey is essential. Those who do venture out should be well prepared, it said. Jenny Hart, of The Highways Agency, said 500 gritting lorries were being used to keep main routes open. She said: "We're well prepared for everything that the snow throws at us at the moment. We've got enough grit to make sure that we can grit continuously for the next 12 days - that's 18,000 tonnes of grit just in Yorkshire alone." The Federation of Small Businesses has estimated that each day of disruption will cost the economy about ?1.2bn. It estimated that on Monday, almost 6.5m people - a Air Force 25fifth of Britain's workforce - took the day off work as a result of the weather. 'Scapegoats' The extent of the disruption to the transport network has prompted some criticism of the UK's preparations for the snow. Liberal Democrat shadow transport secretary Norman Baker said it was "an absolute disgrace" the country's infrastructure was unable to cope with bad weather. "The lack of preparedness is astounding and damaging for the economy," he said. "I have travelled from Stockholm to the Arctic Circle on a train that arrived five minutes early, yet Britain lapses into chaos at the first hint of snow." But others defended the efforts that had been made. Paul Bettison, of the Local Government Association, said councils were being unfairly blamed for much of the disruption. "Other organisations that are affected by the snow UGG Ultimate Tall Braidappear to be using councils as a scapegoat for their own poor preparations for the weather," he said. Sam Katz, the mayor of Winnipeg in Canada, a city used to heavy winter snowfalls, told the BBC he had a lot of sympathy for UK cities struggling to cope with the adverse conditions. "We are set up to expect snow... so we know how to deal with these types of situations and to keep things going," he said. "When you're in a city... or a country that... isn't set up for something to happen on a regular basis, it makes it much, much more difficult." The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, admitted that theShox Dendara capital was not equipped to deal with the unusually heavy snowfalls seen on Sunday night. "This is the kind of snow we haven't seen in London in decades. We don't have the snow-ploughs that we would otherwise need to be sure of getting the roads free," he said. But he added it did not necessarily make sense to make a major investment in snow-ploughs if they were used only once every two decades.

| NBA Power Rankings: LeBron James and Cavs are kings 1. Cavaliers (35-8; Last week: 3)* With the Lakers losing at home to Charlotte, and the Magic dropping two straight after becoming our No. 1 team, the Cavs are back on top, but not all is well. Going into Thursday night's game in Orlando, the NBA's top-ranked defense has sprung some leaks, allowing 103 ppg on 47% shooting in Nike air shoxits last five games. 2. Magic (34-10; LW: 1)* After defeating three division leaders (San Antonio, Lakers and Denver) on its 4-0 trip, Orlando vaulted into No. 1 spot for the first time all season. Then came bad losses to Boston at home and at Miami. Thursday night vs. the Cavs, the Magic tried to halt its two-game losing streak, their first since starting the season 0-2. 3. Lakers (35-9; LW: 2) You know the last team the Lakers want to see in the Finals? It's not the Celtics, Cavs or Magic. Believe it or not, it's the Bobcats. Larry Brown's sub.-500 team defeated Kobe and Co. on Tuesday for the fifth time in its last six tries, and won its third straight game at Staples Center. Go figure. 4. Celtics (38-9; LW: 5) They're moving up the charts and could easily be on a Nike air Force12-game winning streak when the Lakers come to town on Thursday. You think Kevin Garnett needs to be reminded about what happened the last time he and his teammates played L.A.? 5. Spurs (30-14; LW: 4)* We had no choice but to demote Tim Duncan and Co. one spot after their suprisingly lackadaisical effort in a 14-point road loss to the Lakers. 6. Nuggets (30-16; LW: 6) Carmelo Anthony returns Friday night vs. Charlotte after a 10-game absence due to a broken hand. The Nuggets survived without him, going 6-4. But they need him now, as they start an eight-game road trip on Wednesday. 7. Hornets (28-14; LW: 7) They've already lost to four teams they swept last season (the Knicks, Bobcats, Cavs and Hawks), but thanks to Chris Paul, they're still only two games off last year's 56-win pace. 8. Trail Blazers (28-17; LW: 8) The Blazers have moved a season-best 11 games over .500, buta href="http://www.ugg2u.net">UGG they've got a losing road record and haven't won on the road against a team with a winning record since defeating the Pistons in Auburn Hills on Nov. 30. Not that beating the Pistons is anything special these days. 9. Hawks (26-19; LW: 9) It's obvious that the slumping Hawks need to get back an integral member of their young core, Al Horford, in the coming days. As their top interior player/rebounder has been sidelined by a knee injury, they've lost six of 10. 10. Rockets (28-19; LW: 10) We just couldn't bring ourselves to elevate the Suns or Mavs, and you can Nike air shoxforget the Pistons, so the Rockets stay here by default. The story of their season: They've had only two games when Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, Ron Artest and Shane Battier have all been in the starting lineup. |

| Russia and Ukraine Sign Agreement on Gas
MOSCOW ?? Russia and Ukraine signed an agreement on Monday to resolve their dispute over the price of natural gas and the terms of its transit across Ukraine to Europe, and said they would quickly resume shipments of fuel to freezing homes and idled factories. After previous agreements collapsed, officials in Europe had been cautious about the deal negotiated over the weekend between the countries?? prime ministers, Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and Yulia V. Tymoshenko of Ukraine, which was made formal in a ceremony here on Monday. In a hopeful sign, however, Mr. Putin said that Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly, had been ordered to turn the gas back on, for Ukraine??s internal market and for re-export. ?°I hope transit Shox Legend Trainersupplies in the European direction will be fully resumed in the nearest future,?± he said. Ukrainian officials have said that once shipments to the border resumed, restoring pressure in the pipelines for export elsewhere in Europe would require about 36 hours. As it played out over three cold weeks, the gas shutoff left hundreds of thousands of homes in southeastern Europe without heat and shuttered hundreds of factories. Slovakia, alarming its neighbors, had proposed restarting an obsolete nuclear reactor to make up for the gas shortfalls. Yet tensions remain between Russia and Ukraine. On Monday, Russia??s president, Dmitri A. Medvedev, signed an order imposing sanctions on countries that sold weaponry to Georgia, theShox VC former Soviet republic that Russia fought in August. The sanctions would halt military and technical cooperation with such countries. Ukraine has sold weaponry to Georgia and could be harmed by the measure, since its military industry is closely entwined with Russia??s as a legacy of the Soviet Union. But in a sign of some softening of disagreement, at least over the gas business, the two prime ministers complimented each other graciously after the signing ?? a rarity in theirUGG Adirondack Boot II relations. ?°I would like to thank the Ukrainian prime minister, Yulia Vladimirovna Tymoshenko,?± Mr. Putin said. ?°Faced with one of the hardest situations, she took responsibility for making these important decisions.?± Ms. Tymoshenko said, ?°I am very much obliged to Vladimir Vladimirovich and his team for finding the opportunity to grant special terms for Ukraine.?± The contracts will be valid for 10 years but adjusted to current market prices. The contract provides that the price of Russian natural gas in Ukraine will be pegged to prices in Europe, which are linked to international oil prices, but with a 20 percent discount Nike Men Air Force 1 Highin 2009. The discount will be eliminated next year. Under that formula, Ukraine could be expected to pay $208 to $240 for 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas. It paid $179.50 last year. Russia had initially asked for $250 but raised that to $450 in the midst of the shutoff. Ukraine, meanwhile, accepted a transit fee that is about half the average rate in Europe, Nike Men Air Force 1 Lowbut with the understanding that it will be raised next year. Russia halted shipments of gas to Ukraine on Jan. 1 and then, accusing Ukraine of siphoning gas intended for export, halted shipments intended for export on Jan. 6.

2009-Jan-15 23:07 - Signs of Trouble Emerge in Transition??s Last Days |
 |
| |
Signs of Trouble Emerge in Transition??s Last Days WASHINGTON ?? The smooth ride to the inauguration has turned bumpier in its final days for President-elect Barack Obama as he struggles to Shox Pursuit+complete his cabinet, push problematic nominations through the Senate and balance competing demands in his economic package. Mr. Obama has increasingly taken command in Washington even before being sworn in and won an important legislative victory on Thursday, releasing more bailout money. But a transition that has moved forward with precision and decisiveness has also begun encountering signs of trouble that could foreshadow the challenges awaiting him once he moves into the White House next week. The failure of Mr. Obama??s pick for Treasury secretary to pay all of his taxes has pushed off his confirmation so that a stand-in will temporarily lead the department after Mr. Obama??s swearing-in, even as renewed turmoil buffets the financial sector. Aides said Mr. Obama would likewise take office without settling on a commerce secretary to replace his Air Force 25first choice, who dropped out. And the man Mr. Obama once declared should not fill his Senate seat was nonetheless sworn in on Thursday. Most of Mr. Obama??s cabinet choices are heading toward easy confirmation, including Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose nomination for secretary of state was endorsed 16 to 1 by a Senate committee on Thursday. But his designated attorney general, Eric H. Holder Jr., was grilled over his record by another Senate panel. Over all, it appeared that Mr. Obama might not have as many cabinet secretaries in place by Inauguration Day as President Bush did. On policy, the broad consensus Mr. Obama has forged in favor of a huge stimulus program to revive the economy could be tested as Democrats push for more spending and less tax cuts while Republicans push for the opposite. Hoping to rally public supportNike Air Force 1 Mid behind his approach, Mr. Obama plans to fly to Ohio on Friday to hold a town-hall-style meeting on the economy. ?°The tension that we??re starting to see with them trying to get the stimulus through is part of the natural push-pull of the process,?± said Candida P. Wolff, a former White House legislative affairs director for Mr. Bush. ?°A new administration is having to learn to deal with it.?± The Obama team brushed off the road bumps, noting the president-elect??s strong poll numbers and success in persuading lawmakers to release the second half of the $700 billion financial bailout fund. ?°We??re sitting at 71 percent job approval in the midst of the worst economic crisis,?± said Rahm Emanuel, the incoming White House chief of staff. ?°That??s one measure of performance, not Washington talk.?± As for confirmation holdups for Timothy F. Geithner, the Treasury nominee, and Tom Daschle, tapped Shox Turbo V+ 5for secretary of health and human services, Mr. Emanuel called that the normal ?°nicks and cuts?± of the transition process. ?°I??m not going to deny that there??s Tim and also Tom??s stuff,?± he said. ?°But when you take the wide-lens view of everything and weigh the runs versus errors, where does the scorecard come out??± By most measures, the scorecard is still heavily weighted in Mr. Obama??s favor. Even Republicans say he has had a successful transition and appears likely to get all of his nominees confirmed eventually. The troubles that have arisen stand out in part because everything has gone so well for him for so long. But lately, the plan has sometimes gone awry. Mr. Obama spoke out against seating Roland W. Burris as his successor in the Senate because of the corruption accusations against Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich of Illinois,Shox NZ who appointed Mr. Burris. But the Senate Democrats reversed gear and seated him on Thursday anyway. Mr. Obama??s nominee for the Commerce Department, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, pulled out amid a federal investigation into state contracting, and aides said they did not expect Mr. Obama to name a replacement until after Tuesday??s inauguration. Similarly, Mr. Obama??s first choice for director of the Central Intelligence Agency withdrew before being nominated, and the delay in picking Leon E. Panetta for the C.I.A. and Adm. Dennis C. Blair for director of national intelligence means that neither will be confirmed in time for the inauguration
.
http://www.air-shox.com The disclosure that Mr. Geithner paid $48,000 in delinquent taxes and interest, some only when he was about to be nominated, has Nike Men Air Force 1 Highslowed down that confirmation. Several Republicans have said they still support him, so he is still likely to be confirmed, but his hearing will not be held until the day after the inauguration, leaving the Treasury at least briefly in the hands of a caretaker. Obama aides said that would be Treasury Under Secretary Stuart Levey, a Bush appointee who was asked to stay on. While the president-elect and his aides have publicly fallen in line behind Mr. Geithner, privately a few Obama officials have started to express concern. Mr. Geithner??s selection to collect the nation??s taxes after failing to pay his own has become fodder for late-night comics. ?°This needs to get done,?± one nervous Obama transition official said. Other nominees have been delayed as well. Ray LaHood, Mr. Obama??s choice as transportation secretary, was supposed to have his hearing this week, but it was postponedShox Turbo+ IV 4 because he did not turn information over to federal law enforcement officials until recently, leaving the F.B.I. scrambling to complete a background check, a transition official said. The check should be finished this week, the official said. The Senate Finance Committee has likewise not set a date for Mr. Daschle??s hearing while aides review a wide range of financial documents, and a senior Republican committee official said the process would extend beyond the inauguration. ?°We feel perfectly fine about the process and expect him to be confirmed,?± said a senior aide to Mr. Daschle, who insisted Nike Men Air Force 1 Lowon anonymity to discuss the confirmation process. That means that Senate Democrats, who once hoped to beat Mr. Bush??s record of having seven of his cabinet nominees confirmed by Inauguration Day, are no longer confident they can match that. Mrs. Clinton looks certain to be approved by then and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates is being held over and does not require a new Senate vote. Janet Napolitano will probably be confirmed as secretary of homeland security by then, Senate aides said. But it was less certain how many others would be.
